7676: Pretty Creatures Release

 Review: Pretty Creatures – 7676

Glasgow-based alt-rock band Pretty Creatures brings a captivating blend of dark, groovy energy and polished production in their latest track, ‘7676’. With a sound that resonates with the atmospheric qualities of bands like Muse, their latest track showcases their talent for crafting emotive and introspective music. Within this article, I have provided my review of the single followed by an interview with the band where you can learn about their creative process.

Pretty Creatures are comprised of good friends Rory Boyle on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Calum Campbell on electric guitar, Estefanía Badilla Mora on bass guitar and Stephen Buggy on drums. I have recently watched Pretty Creatures perform at Glasgow’s Bloc - in addition to other occasions - and have always found myself moved by their togetherness as a band and lost in their heavier grooves. I would highly recommend keeping an eye open for any upcoming gigs.

7676 Review:

From the outset, the track features catchy melodies supported by beefy guitar riffs that create a tension and release dynamic throughout. Rory's dreamy vocals soar over the instrumentation, adding a layer of ethereal quality that complements the heavy undertones. The catchy chorus line “Break my rib cage to suppress the noise” demonstrates how the band can lock in perfectly with one another over the vocals. Rory’s poignant voice echoes thoughtful lyrics that invite listeners to dive deep into their own introspection.

The combination of the floaty vocals and atmospheric guitar work creates a spacious soundscape, leaving room for delicate guitar solos that enhance the overall experience. The chorus builds with each repetition, ensuring that once the melody sticks, it truly resonates.

The energetic outro, highlighted by Calum’s powerful solo, serves as a perfect culmination of the song’s emotional journey. It’s a moment that encapsulates the band’s ability to lock in together tightly, delivering a performance that feels both cohesive and expansive.

‘7676’ is an experience that will transport you into a different realm: intended to be absorbed and savoured. Originally released on Bandcamp on the  11th October, it has been released to all major streaming platforms today – on the 28th November. Pretty Creatures Interview:

Q 1) What was the recording process like for your new single?

“The first one was exciting for us. We were in Mark Morrow’s studio. We were live tracking, and getting a good sound with bass and drums. We experimented with weird noises, and putting effects on Rory’s beautiful voice.” - Calum

“We have done a lot of work with Mark in the past but this was the first time with Stef, so it was exciting to go back and rework. He let us experiment with weird sounds towards the end of the recording. Overall it was a really smooth process.” – Rory

“Was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had recording. I have worked in the past with single tracking mostly with other musicians who already have their processes and then adding stuff to the final product, but this time it felt like a more creative process. Definitely the most fun I have had recording.” - Estefanía

“We have always been very collaborative. We even had Stef (Estefanía) playing bongos at one point.” - Calum

“It’s important to us to capture the energy between us. We’ve always enjoyed experimenting. We spent so much time rehearsing, so we’re just trying to capture the energy and hopefully that comes through in the track.” - Rory

Q2) What would you describe your live performances to be like:

Energy. Raw emotion and energy.” - Calum

“A philosophy of leaving as much on stage as possible: trying to channel our energy and drive the song. Throw myself about as much as I can. It doesn’t matter if anyone is there to see you or nobody and that is really important to me when playing live.” - Rory

“Having fun, and we as people get along so well which translates to the audience. We really like playing these songs and that’s what comes across.” - Estefanía

Q3) What have you guys got planned for the rest of this year? Are you working on any new singles right now?

“We just recorded our EP in November. The idea would be to record this year and release a single at the beginning of next year and possibly have an EP released in May.  This is our first EP and we’ve been working on it for a while, so we want it to be as cohesive as possible and promote it as much as we can. It’s important that it feels cohesive and not just a few songs that have been conjoined together.” - Estefanía

Q4) Finally, what do you want people to take away from your music?

“Go be sad and depressed after listening to it!” - Callum

“If people don’t have an existential crisis we’ve not done our job!” - Estefanía

“If it doesn’t make your tummy feel funny we’re not doing it right!” - Stephen

“It’s very cathartic. The things you don’t usually say outlaid. It’s that process of being able to get these feelings out.” - Estefanía

“We’re trying to set a tone for these songs and hopefully that comes across. Hopefully it makes you feel things.” - Calum
